Last Friday’s rain dried out by Tuesday, so that we got into the field and did a bunch of transplanting, finally finishing out the onions and moving into a second crop of lettuce. Rain on Tuesday night kicked us back out of the field in time for harvesting, washing and packing. High winds Wednesday made it likely that we’ll be back in the field on Thursday, and caught up on transplanting and seeding.
Joined this week by Ron, Jason, Edwin, and Eric, we took advantage of the large workforce to move ahead on transplanting. Jason and Edwin did some serious weeding in the crop greenhouses, and Ben and August worked to finish the new trolley system in the greenhouse; the new trolley system allows us to move 32 flats of transplants at a time, right up the greenhouse door, instead of carrying them two-by-two down the narrow rows between the benches. Sarah undertook a deep cleaning of the packing house, and Jana kept up on packing herbs for our wholesale accounts. Ron did field work until it rained, then turned his attention to doing the overdue routine maintenance on the medium-sized Kubota.
