Farm Happenings

What We Did: We had a big harvest week, starting on Saturday. Sarah and Kerry joined Chris on Saturday to harvest about 2,000 pounds of Beauty Heart winter radishes down at Rick’s, and another 800 or so pounds of celeriac back at the home farm. On Tuesday, we went back at it to harvest Black Spanish winter radishes and turnips. On Wednesday, we started our squash harvest and put a thousand pounds of beets in the cooler.

Weather: The week started mild and pleasant, and we thought we had missed any forecast rain until the thunder started rolling in the middle of Sunday night, with a nice drizzle continuing for about five hours. Nearly an inch of rain kept us out of the field for most of Monday, although we did make it up on the ridge for pepper harvest. Tuesday dawned almost-cold, although not quite, and the rest of the week continued mostly sunny and cool, without only a light frost on Thursday morning – perfect weather for roots harvest!

Comings and Goings: Kerry, a nursing student at Decorah’s Luther College, joined us on a part-time basis as we move into our less time-sensitive fall season. Lisa left for a trip to Japan, where she’ll be participating in the Willing Workers on Organic Farms program. Brenda, who until recently ran a daycare service in Mabel, started full time on Monday. We are pleased to be going into the fall with such an excellent crew.
