Farm News

Things finally dried out enough to get some final field work done. We wrapped up a disappointing carrot harvest and put bins of turnips, winter radish, and daikon radish into the walk-in cooler. We mowed out old crops of broccoli and cauliflower, then tilled some ground to prepare for the last round of cover crop seeding for the year.

The family got a dog, as yet unnamed. Officially, he’s a border collie – lab mix, but we suspect a bit of beagle somewhere in his background.

We planted garlic a little bit late this year, again due to the wet weather that continued to plague us into October. We are trying something a little different this year, and set the cloves into trenches dug in foot-high peas and oats. The peas and oats will die off before spring, providing an in-place mulch for the garlic.
